Botox Before the Holidays: When to Book for Photos and Events
Book Botox about 4 weeks before an event if it's your first time, 2 weeks if you're returning. What the FDA labels say about onset, peak and bruising.

Book about four weeks before the event if it is your first treatment, and at least two weeks before if you are a returning patient. Those numbers come from how the drug works. The FDA labels describe the effect building through the first week, a peer-reviewed review puts full effect at about two weeks, and a first-timer needs a second two weeks for the follow-up check and any adjustment.
"Botox" here is the search term. People use it as a generic word for any wrinkle relaxer, and the timing below applies to the four that Revive carries: BOTOX Cosmetic, Jeuveau, DAXXIFY and XEOMIN. None of them is ranked here, and the right one depends on the person, not the calendar.
What the labels say about timing
| What the label says about onset | Primary result measured at | Duration, as published | |
|---|---|---|---|
| BOTOX Cosmetic | Effect begins "one to two days after injection, increasing in intensity during the first week" | Day 30 | "Approximately 3-4 months" (label) |
| Jeuveau | Not stated in the label; the published trials saw a difference from placebo at the first visit, Day 2 | Day 30 | Not stated in the label; trials followed patients for 150 days |
| XEOMIN | "Median onset... within two to seven days" | Day 30 | "Up to 12-16 weeks," varying by patient (label) |
| DAXXIFY | Not stated in the label | Week 4 | Median of about 24 weeks at none-or-mild severity in its two phase 3 trials |
A caution on that last column: each product was tested in separate trials with different doses, endpoints and follow-up rules, so the figures are not a contest. For a December event it barely matters.
What matters is the middle column. Every trial judged its main result at about a month, not at a few days. A 2014 review in American Family Physician is more specific: effects "take about two weeks to fully develop," with maximal reduction visible at two weeks. A 2025 randomized trial in JAMA Dermatology that compared four toxin formulations found that the peak effect was similar across all of them.
So plan for the result in the photos to be the two-week result.
Your booking timeline
Count back from the event. The follow-up column is the two-week check Revive includes with every wrinkle relaxer treatment.
| Event | First-timer: book by | Two-week check falls around | Returning patient: latest sensible date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holiday party, Saturday, Dec 12 | Nov 14 | Nov 28 | Nov 28 |
| Holiday party, Saturday, Dec 19 | Nov 21 | Dec 5 | Dec 5 |
| Nochebuena and Christmas, Dec 24-25 | Nov 23-25 (Thanksgiving week) | Dec 7-9 | Dec 10 |
| New Year's Eve, Thursday, Dec 31 | Dec 3 | Dec 17 | Dec 17 |
These dates are planning conventions built on the two-week figure, not a promise of a result by a particular day.
Why first-timers need the extra two weeks
A returning patient already knows how their face responds to their usual dose. A first-timer does not, and neither does the injector yet.
The two-week visit looks at the settled result. If one brow sits a little higher, or a line meant to soften still shows, that is the point to adjust, and an adjustment follows the same clock as the first treatment. Booking four weeks out leaves room for that. Booking two weeks out means the first look at the result happens at the party.
The "don't lie down for four hours" rule
Almost every aftercare sheet says to stay upright for four hours and skip the gym for 24. We read the patient Medication Guides for all four products the clinic carries, plus Dysport's. None of them contains either instruction. The only activity warning in each Medication Guide is this: if you develop muscle weakness, vision problems or dizziness in the hours to weeks after treatment, do not drive or operate machinery.
The four-hour rule does appear in the medical literature, but as advice, not as tested fact. The same 2014 American Family Physician review that recommends avoiding lying flat for four hours, and avoiding heavy exercise, alcohol and hot tubs on the day of treatment, says these measures "are not supported by randomized controlled trials." A 2025 retrospective study in Toxins of 5,014 Italian patients who followed only a 10-minute precaution protocol reported no cases of upper eyelid ptosis, though the authors note it had no control group and call for randomized trials.
The honest summary: it is a convention, cheap to follow, so most clinics still ask for it. Follow your own injector's instructions. It is just not a label requirement.
Bruising: the real reason to leave a buffer
Bruising is the side effect most likely to show in a photo. The labels list bleeding and bruising at the injection site as a possibility. In the trials the rates were low (for example, 2% with XEOMIN versus 1% with placebo across its upper facial lines studies), but it happens, especially around the eyes. The XEOMIN label notes that "ecchymosis easily occurs in the soft tissues of the eyelid."
How long a bruise lasts is not in any label. The American Family Physician review describes bruises ranging from pinpoint marks to quarter-sized, and says larger ones "can take up to two weeks to resolve." That is the same two weeks as the full effect, which is why two weeks is the floor even for a returning patient. If you take a blood thinner or a supplement that affects bleeding, raise it at the consultation. Do not stop a prescribed medication on your own.
If filler is part of the plan, it has its own settling time; see dermal fillers and how long Radiesse lasts. Wrinkle relaxers compares the four brands without ranking them, is Jeuveau stronger than Botox? covers the most common comparison question, and injectables has the full menu. BOTOX Cosmetic is listed at $14 per unit, with the two-week check included, and patients who treat on a regular schedule may want to look at the membership.
