Tattoo & PMU Removal: What to Actually Expect

How Q-switched 1064/532 nm removal works, what drives the number of sessions, what healing looks like, what the real risks are, and how laser compares with saline and picosecond options. No guarantees, because there are none worth believing.

The mechanism

How Q-Switched Laser Removal Works

A Q-switched laser fires in nanosecond pulses. The pulse is short enough that its energy shatters pigment particles rather than heating the surrounding tissue for a sustained period. Your body then clears the fragments gradually through normal immune and lymphatic processes. The laser does not remove ink. It breaks ink into pieces small enough for you to remove it yourself, which is why results appear between sessions rather than during them.

Revive uses the Spectrum Q-switched Nd:YAG platform, which runs two wavelengths. Matching the wavelength to the pigment is the whole game:

1064 nm

Particularly useful for black and dark pigment. Penetrates more deeply, and is generally the safer choice in deeper skin tones.

532 nm

Useful for red and selected warm-colored pigments. Works closer to the surface, which matters for shallow cosmetic work.

Blue, green and yellow pigments are not efficiently targeted by 1064/532 nm alone and commonly plateau. Any claim that one device treats every ink color equally is marketing, not physics.

The question everyone asks

How Many Sessions Will It Take?

Some tattoos and cosmetic brow pigments fade substantially after a limited number of sessions, while others require a longer series or retain residual pigment. We will not give you a number before we have watched your pigment respond to one treatment, because the honest answer depends on all of this:

  • Ink or pigment composition, which is often unknown for older work
  • Depth and density, including layered cover-ups
  • Color mix and whether each color matches an available wavelength
  • Age of the tattoo or PMU work
  • Location on the body and local circulation
  • Skin type and scarring history
  • Prior removal attempts, laser or otherwise
  • How efficiently your body clears fragmented pigment

Session spacing matters too, and more frequent treatment is not automatically better. Treating before the clearance phase has run its course adds risk without adding result.

Healing Timeline and Aftercare

  1. 1Immediately afterTransient whitening of the treated area is common and fades within minutes to an hour. Redness and swelling follow. Pinpoint bleeding or a localized reaction may occur depending on the settings used. This whitening is a treatment endpoint, not a result, and it is never what the final outcome looks like.
  2. 2First few daysSwelling settles. Crusting, blistering or tenderness may develop. The area should be kept clean, protected and out of direct sun. Do not pick at crusting, which is the most common avoidable cause of scarring.
  3. 3One to two weeksCrusting typically resolves. Treated skin may look pink, lighter or darker than the surrounding area. Temporary pigment change at this stage is common and usually settles.
  4. 4Weeks to monthsThis is the clearance phase, and it is where the actual result happens. Fragmented pigment is carried away gradually by your body. Judging progress in the first week is meaningless, which is why sessions are spaced.
  5. 5Next sessionScheduled on how the area healed and how much pigment remains, not on a rigid calendar. Treating too frequently raises risk without improving the outcome.

Why PMU Removal Has Its Own Rules

Cosmetic tattoo pigments can behave differently from traditional body tattoo inks. Some pigments may darken after laser exposure. For this reason, provider assessment and a test spot may be recommended before treating the full area.

Cosmetic brow pigment is often deposited more superficially than densely packed professional body tattoo ink, and its composition varies widely: iron oxides, titanium dioxide and mixed cosmetic pigments all behave differently under laser light. Older work frequently has no record of what was used at all.

That uncertainty is not a reason to avoid treatment. It is a reason to test before committing a whole brow to it. Read more on the PMU and eyebrow removal page.

Choosing a goal

Fading vs Removal

These are different treatment plans with different endpoints, and picking the right one at the start saves both sessions and money. Fading aims to lighten existing work enough that a new tattoo can be designed over it. Removal pursues as much clearance as the pigment will give up.

Fading generally takes fewer sessions. Removal takes as many as it takes, and may still leave residual pigment or ghosting. Complete clearance is not a realistic universal endpoint, so anyone marketing it as a guarantee is selling you something they cannot deliver.

How many sessions does tattoo removal take?
There is no universal number, and a provider who quotes one before seeing your tattoo respond is guessing. Some tattoos and cosmetic brow pigments fade substantially after a limited number of sessions, while others require a longer series or retain residual pigment. Response depends on ink composition, depth, density, color, tattoo age, location, skin type, and individual clearance.
Most people describe a rapid, hot snapping sensation, generally more intense than getting tattooed but over much faster because a session covers the area quickly. Smaller areas such as brows take very little time. Comfort options are discussed at consultation.
It can. Blistering, crusting, textural change, lasting pigment change and ghosting are all documented outcomes. Risk rises with aggressive settings, sessions spaced too closely, and picking at healing skin. Conservative settings and adequate spacing are what keep that risk low.
Ghosting is a faint shadow or outline of the original design that remains after pigment stops responding to treatment. It can happen even when a series has otherwise gone well, and it is one reason complete clearance is not a realistic universal endpoint.
Yes. Certain pigments, particularly those containing iron oxide or titanium dioxide and shades that are white, flesh-toned or pink, can darken paradoxically after laser exposure. This is most relevant to cosmetic tattooing, and it is why a test spot may be recommended before treating a full brow.
Neither is universally better. A Q-switched Nd:YAG uses nanosecond pulses and is established technology for black and dark pigment, and for red pigment at the right wavelength. Picosecond systems can improve efficiency for some difficult pigments and residual ink, and may outperform Q-switch for some eyebrow tattoos and certain blue, green and yellow pigments. Complete clearance is not guaranteed with either.
Saline removal is a tattooing procedure: the skin is reopened and a saline solution is used to lift pigment out. Laser removal fragments pigment beneath intact skin so the body can clear it over time. Saline is generally used on small cosmetic work rather than body tattoos. Revive performs Q-switched laser removal and does not offer saline removal.
No. Fading for a cover-up is a legitimate goal and usually takes fewer sessions, because the existing work only needs to be light enough for a new design to sit over it cleanly. Deciding this up front changes the treatment plan and the cost.
